Choose Basement Designs That Fit Your Needs

Before you can start tearing out walls and putting in floors, you need to analyse your needs and determine what your room will be used for and go over different basement remodeling ideas. Some people simply want an additional living space with sofas and a tv, but others prefer a more functional use of the space, like a home gym or game room.

Basement Designs

Deciding what basement designs to choose will play a large role in how to renovate it since it will determine the kind of lighting, flooring and even wall insulation you might want. Functions like a sports room or home theater might require an open concept space but won't need a lot of lighting, but a home gym or laundry area might demand sound proofing and brighter lights.

Once the function is decided, decorate as you would upstairs, not as you would in a cellar, and choose paint colors that will highlight the room's purpose and showcase its theme.

Make Your Basement Designs A Reality

With the basement remodeling plans in place, you next need to make some big decisions on the structure of the room. Decide if any walls need to come out, if you need to install waterproofing for damp areas and what your basement finishing cost should be to decide on each of the following factors:

Ceilings

A basement's ceiling is not only unattractive but can be dangerous as well, so go through different basement ceiling ideas to finish it. If you have wires and ductwork to hide, a suspended ceiling is easy to put in, but it can also be drywalled for a smoother, cleaner look. You should not overlook ceilings when choosing basement designs.

Floors

Floating floors, carpeting and tiles are all basement flooring options, but be sure to add underlayment for noise and cold reduction if you feel it will be a factor for you. Also, make sure to waterproof the concrete before any carpeting is placed to avoid mold and mildew build up.

Walls

Basement drywall is the best and easiest solution for a diy project, but it can be messy. Try to get some practice in cutting and measuring your drywall and read up on proper placement to avoid having to tear it down and start over. It is not expensive though if you do need to rip out a piece, but the mess and time is a deterrent.

With a solid and clean ceiling, floor and walls, you will be ready for your basement decorating and painting to make your basement designs come through. The remodel is a long and tedious job, but if you have the patience to do it yourself, you can be more creative and involved in the process to ensure it comes out exactly as you want it.
