Basement Drywall DIY Installation Guide

If you are planning on finishing your basement yourself, there are many projects you need to research and master to make sure that along with saving money, you will also end up with a result you can be proud of. Hanging basement drywall is one of those jobs, and although it may not seem terribly difficult, if done incorrectly, it can ruin the entire look of your basement.

If you hire contractors, they should be able to finish the job in about half a day because this is routine work for them, but a diy project will take a bit longer. Ideally you will want to have the opportunity to practice in an area that is not so significant, so many people opt to start with their garage if it needs to be done. By the end of the first project, you can hopefully move on to your basement with a little more ease and confidence.

Preparations Prior To Drywall Installation

Before you hang drywall, you want to ensure that your walls are prepared and properly insulated and waterproof. Ripping the drywall off to make repairs later is a hassle, so take this extra step beforehand.

1. Check that all your wall studs are secure and level. If any are missing, add them.

2. For exterior walls, make sure they are properly insulated first. For interior walls, add any soundproofing you might want.

3. Make sure you add a moisture barrier since vapor and dampness in a basement can cause cracking, mildew and many other problems.

4. Install metal protective covers over all wires or pipes to prevent you from nailing into them when you are hanging the drywall.

How to Hang Basement Drywall

Once you have prepared your area, purchased your drywall and are equipped with either screws and a screw gun or nails and a hammer, you can begin planning and installing your drywall.

1. Decide if you want to run your drywall perpendicular; from floor to ceiling, or horizontal; using 2 pieces to span the wall height. A horizontal job is often easier and provides less seams to cover.

2. First select some extra drywall pieces and position them at the bottom of the wall on the floor. You will then lay your sheets of drywall over this and remove them when done to allow for a space for carpeting, molding or flooring to be installed.

3. Hammer in a few nails at the top of your drywall piece to keep it steady and allow you to work. Then take your nail or screw gun and insert the nails or screws into the studs. Do this about every 8 inches.

4. Take your next piece of drywall and place it above the first. Follow the same procedure to secure it.

The installation of drywall is not difficult if you follow the right procedure and plan ahead, but it can create a huge mess is you don't know what you're doing, and it can take a long time to complete.

On the positive side though, if you compare the cost of this diy project to the estimates from contractors, you will see that you can save a lot of money on your basement finishing cost, so get tips, follow directions and then a basement drywall job will not seem impossible.
